Patna: Students who appeared for the JEE-Mains 2018 conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Sunday had mixed reactions about the national-level engineering test.

Some students claimed the paper was tough but others felt it was easier because a lot of questions had similarities with previous years'. Some felt the mathematics paper was tougher because it was lengthy and required too much calculations.

Kumar Utpal, a student who was spotted at the examination centre at Kendriya Vidyalaya on Bailey Road, said: "The mathematics paper was tough as it needed much calculation and ate up a lot of time." Utpal said since many questions in the mathematics section were from coordinate geometry and calculus many students failed to attempt the questions because of lack of time.

Another candidate Vivek Narayan said: "Chemistry was easier as many questions were theory or formula based. Students having good command over organic and physical chemistry must have found the paper easy."

Vivek said it has been observed that generally out of three sections - physics, chemistry and mathematics - two are easier. "Chemistry was easy, physics was tough but mathematics was the toughest," added Vivek.

Students who appeared for JEE-Mains, which is a gateway to the IITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutions, said the cut-off this year for the Mains will be lower compared to previous years.

The three-hour JEE Mains consist of three section comprising 30 objective questions each from all sections. Sunday's was the offline mode of examination.

For every correct answer there are four marks, while for every wrong answer a mark is deducted. As there was negative marking, students were afraid of attempting questions which they had doubts in.

In Bihar, the examination was held at 76 examination centres with 47 centres in Patna, 17 in Muzaffarpur and 12 in Gaya. Around 58,000 students from across the state appeared for the JEE Mains. The examination was held from 9.30am to 12.30noon. Students were allowed entry at the centres from 7.30am. The second sitting was held from 2pm to 5pm.
