Calcutta, Aug. 31: An Alipore jail warder was today showcaused for allegedly carrying breakfast from outside to East Bengal official Debabrata Sarkar’s cell and saying he had done so at the behest of American Center attack mastermind Aftab Ansari.

Ansari, serving a life term, is lodged in the cell next to that of Sarkar, arrested in connection with the Saradha scam.

“On being confronted by a colleague, the warder said he was taking the breakfast from outside to Sarkar on Ansari’s instruction. We have started a probe,” a jail official said. He added the authorities were probing whether other inmates had received such benefits at the behest of Ansari, also convicted in the Khadim owner kidnapping case.

The official said Sarkar alias Nitu, who is in judicial custody, had not sought permission for food from outside.

The CBI today questioned Assam-based businessman Rajesh Bajaj in connection with the Saradha case. A CBI source said Bajaj was asked about Saradha chief Sudipta Sen’s alleged business deal with former Congress MP Matang Sinh. “Bajaj had introduced Sinh to Sen and allegedly played the role of a mediator when the deal to buy a TV channel owned by the Congress leader was being struck,” he said.

The CBI today did not interrogate Assam singer Sadananda Gogoi as the sleuths were “busy”. He said the CBI had told him that he would be summoned again shortly.

The Enforcement Directorate today attached a closed resort owned by the Saradha Group in Jalpaiguri’s Malbazar. Two vacant Saradha plots near Gorumara National Park were also attached.
