A 23-year-old television actress was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her Behala home on Thursday morning after spending the previous evening watching the IPL 8 match at the Eden Gardens in the company of an actor friend.
Disha Ganguly, whose calling card was her role as Disha Debroy in the STAR Jalsha mega serial Tumi Ashbe Bole, had returned home late on Wednesday after visiting her actor friend's Beleghata home to meet his mother.
She and the actor were a couple and had been planning to marry, Tollywood sources said.
Disha had last spoken to her friend over phone on Wednesday night to ask him whether his mother liked her. The actor, who features in the STAR Jalsha serial Kiranmala, apparently told her that he didn't get the opportunity to speak to his mother about her before she went to bed.
At 11.50am on Thursday, the actress's friend reached Udayan Apartment on Banamali Naskar Road to find out why she hadn't been taking calls all morning. He broke open the door and found her hanging from the fan by a dupatta. Disha was declared dead at Vidyasagar hospital.
Disha and a 12-year-old domestic help were the only occupants of the flat since her mother left for Nairobi to join her father.
The police said Disha recently fell out with a TV actress who had stayed in her flat for some time. But there is nothing yet to suggest that her suspected suicide had anything to do with the duo's fractured friendship.
"The other actress had moved out after Disha's mother objected to her staying in their flat. That may have caused the friendship between the two young women to break," a police officer said.
Investigators hope to find clues to Disha's death once they unlock her mobile phone, which is password-protected.
Disha had started her career with the Zee Bangla mega serial Kanakanjali and went on to participate in several non-fiction shows on the same channel.
Her Facebook profile says that she was born and schooled in Tanzania, where her father worked. She moved to Calcutta later and did her graduation from Bhawanipur Education Society College before becoming an actress.
