Police arrested seven Trinamul Congress activists on Friday for their alleged involvement in the attack on the home of elderly party leader Fazal Karim Mollah in Bhangar late on Tuesday night.

A group of armed goons allegedly fired at least 12 rounds in addition to hurling nearly half a dozen bombs targeting the house of Molla, a former area-committee president of the Trinamul, that unleashed panic among local residents in Barali.

Mollah and his family members, however, escaped unhurt after managing to take shelter under a cot.

Mollah had categorically alleged following the incident that Kaizer Ahmed, former Bhangar block president, who is also a panchayat samiti member, had planned on killing him because he (Mollah) had raised his voice against alleged extortion threats, corruption and hobnobbing with the ISF on Kaizer’s part.

Police said that based on eyewitness accounts and a complaint lodged by Mollha at Bhangar police station, seven persons were arrested from various locations.

The seven arrested persons are residents of Sainhati, Jagulgachi, and Barali areas of Bhangar and are also close aides of Kaizer Ahmed. A court in Baruipur on Friday remanded them in six days’ police custody
