Sources said a group of around 20 youths were playing music in sound boxes at a high volume at Babla Mandal Para under Mothabari police station of the district.

“Some residents asked them to lower the volume but the youths did just the opposite. It led to an altercation between residents and youths,” said a local source.

Trinamul leader Momin, a former panchayat member, intervened and asked the youths to leave without argument.

The youths left then but soon returned with sticks and iron rods.

“Sensing trouble, my father (Momin) went to the spot again. Then, the youths shoved him to the ground and attacked him,” alleged Mohammad Jahangir Ali, Momin’s son. Family members rushed him to the health centre where doctors pronounced him dead, Ali added.

“We are waiting for the post-mortem report. Probe is on,” said a police officer.
