Creation and celebration
Acommunion of like-minded painters, printmakers and sculptors, the Society of Contemporary Artists has relentlessly striven for the sake of art for more than 50 years. In recent times, the group has contributed to the mainstream of Indian art in diverse, revolutionary and even controversial ways. Its artists have projected the image of man’s search for himself and his insistence of personal freedom through aesthetic medium, but always in an innovative, experimental fashion. It boasts, among its members, some of the best-known figures of contemporary Indian art, including stalwarts Somnath Hore, Nikhil Biswas, Shyamal Dutta Ray, Bikash Bhattacharjee and Ajit Chakraborty. The group launches the celebration of its golden jubilee with the ongoing exhibition of small-format art works in a show that vividly captures the variety and vitality of its contribution to contemporary art. Participants: Amitabha Bhattacharya, Atin Basak, B.R. Panesar, Ganesh Haloi, Lalu Prasad Shaw, Manoj Dutta (a painting by him appears here), Manu Parekh, Niranjan Pradhan, Partho Dasgupta, Sanat Kar, Sunil Das and others.
