Tagore revisited
Continuing its expedition to discover the versatile genius of Tagore, Happenings, in association with Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre and Sanskriti Sagar, hosts the five-day Rabinda Utsav 2008 — A Rediscovery of Tagore’s Creations, commencing today. The festival celebrates Tagore’s immortal works of prose, poetry, drama and music, rendered and recreated by some of the best performers of the day. Besides featuring artistes from all over the country, the cultural fiesta also includes performers from Bangladesh with Chhayanat (Dhaka) performing Mukti Sangrame Rabibabur Gaan (dir: Azizur Rahman) tomorrow at Bharatiyam Complex EZCC; 7 pm. To be inaugurated today at Rabindra Sadan at 6 pm, this evening’s programme will witness veteran thespian Soumitra Chattopadhyay’s Protidin Tabo Gatha- Ja Aamaar Nijaswa, a truly original, unusual work offering a fresh perspective on some of Tagore’s evergreen creations in verse. The festival also features veteran choreographers Kiran Segal and Chitra Visweswaran, who respond to Tagore’s poems and songs in their own chosen dance idioms, Baharul Islam (Assam), who addresses a Tagore short story, while local band Dohar present a musical ensemble relating to the rich tradition of Bengali folk songs. Also, Sanjay Upadhyay (Patna) recreates Tagore’s poetry and Manoj Shah (Gujarat) offers Achalayatan.
