Calcutta, June 8: Sujan Chakraborty, the CPM South 24-Parganas district secretary, was allegedly heckled by Trinamul activists this morning and forced to take shelter in a comrade’s home in Baruipur for two hours as the men surrounded the house.

Chakraborty, a former MP, was freed by police after he called them up and complained of intimidation by the Trinamul activists. Later, the CPM leader’s driver lodged a complaint at Baruipur police station in his presence.

“We have received the complaint. We are looking into it and trying to find out what happened with him when he went to Baruipur to take part in a party fund-raising drive this morning. We have learnt that he was kept confined in a room by miscreants,’’ a district police officer said.

Chakraborty alleged he was waylaid near the area where the CPM was organising the fund-raising drive and the “mass-contact’’ programme around 8.15am.

“Around 25 Trinamul activists stopped my car and hurled abuses at me. They threatened that all hell would break loose if the CPM tried to go ahead with the fund-raising,” Chakraborty said.

He said that as the Trinamul men closed in, he was forced to take shelter in the house of party worker Kanai Sapui.

The Trinamul activists allegedly surrounded the house and did not allow anyone to step out.

Chakraborty alleged his driver was beaten up and asked to drive away with the vehicle. “They threatened Ram Haldar (driver) that they would set the car ablaze if he did not take it away. They appeared drunk. They gheraoed Kanai’s house and did not allow me to leave.”

“My security guard was also roughed up,’’ he added.Shyamsundar Chakraborty, Trinamul’s Baruipur block secretary, said: “Sujan babu’s allegations are baseless. Trinamul is not involved in the incident.”
