Arambagh, June 4: Mamata Banerjee today renamed four stations in Hooghly after Bengal luminaries connected to the district.

“Arambagh station will be named after Prafulla Chandra Sen. Mayapur station will be known as Raja Ram Mohan Roy station from now on. Takipur halt will be named after (philanthropist and Persian and Arabic scholar) Mohammad Mohsin and Talpur station after Saratchandra Chattopadhyay,” the chief minister said at a programme where she inaugurated a railway line between Arambagh and Talpur. The tracks will connect Arambagh with Tarakeswar and Howrah.

Mayapur and Takipur stations fall between Arambagh and Talpur.

While former chief minister Sen had made Hooghly his home, the rest were born in the district.

From the railway stage, Mamata announced several state government projects. She said she would set up an agriculture college in Singur. She also announced a polytechnic college and a kisan mandi at Arambagh, an IT hub and a minority development office at Chinsurah, and primary health centres and integrated child development service centres at Arambagh, Khanakul, Chanditala, Panduah and Jangipara.

Mamata expressed anger at the lack of a shed for the crowd. “You all have been waiting in the sun for long. The railways have not made proper arrangements. At state government programmes, we make arrangements to protect the audience from the sun. The place has not been watered properly. There is so much dust.”

Railway minister Mukul Roy apologised to the audience. “I am sorry. I beg you to forgive me.”
