Sources said a tea company had set up the plantation in a 70-bigha plot. A few years back, the company deserted the plantation as it was incurring losses. Since then, the workers, who were serving in the plantation, started running it on their own.

The garden is located in Nichkhali village of the block.

A few months back, Hashibul Rahaman, a resident of Bhabanipur area of Chopra, tried to wrest control over the garden. The workers protested and both sides had an altercation.

“Even a meeting was held at the house of Hamidul Rahaman, the local Trinamool MLA to resolve the issue. But nothing yielded out of it,” said a source.

On Saturday, Hashibul, along with some of his associates, reached the plantation and tried to encroach it. The workers protested. Soon, a clash ensued.

During the clash, pellets were fired and two persons were hit by the pellets. Some others also got injured in the incident.

A police team reached the spot and dispersed both the warring groups.

Investigations have started but no arrests have been made so far, police sources said.
