Siliguri, Jan. 21: The Executive Council of North Bengal University today terminated the service of former registrar Dilip Kumar Sarkar, who had been under suspension since March 30, 2010, for alleged misappropriation of Rs 1.5 crore.

According to NBU officials, the council took the decision after the Supreme Court passed an order in July last year, asking the varsity to take an "appropriate decision" on Sarkar's suspension.

"As per the Supreme order, the council issued a show-cause to Sarkar and he replied that he was innocent and he should be reinstated. However, after much deliberation and based on the findings of a departmental inquiry on the misappropriation of funds, the council members unanimously decided today that he should be terminated from service," a varsity official said.

Sarkar said he had not received any official intimation on the council's decision.
