| Chief minister B.C. Roy inspects the landfill |
January 23, 1948: Bidhan Chandra Roy is sworn in as the second chief minister of West Bengal. The biggest problem he faced was the influx of refugees who started infiltrating across the border from East Pakistan. Calcutta’s population started multiplying.
April 16, 1962: Roy inaugurates the land fill project for Salt FLake, with irrigation minister Ajay Mukherjee and parliamentary affairs minister Jagannath Kole by his side.
July 1, 1962: Roy dies.
1965: Landfill is complete for Sector I.
1966: Plot distribution starts.
1969: Landfill is complete for Sectors II and III.
March 9, 1970: The first reside-nts, Jitendranath Chakraborty and family, move into AB 129, Sector I.
1979: Plot distribution starts for Sector II.
April 5, 1973: A circular is printed in Calcutta Gazette, changing the name of Salt Lake City officially to Bidhannagar.
1980: Plot distribution starts for Sector III.
1989: The Notified Area Authority takes over charge of the civic services of the township from the state government.
1995: The first elected municipal board is formed.
