Karmakar, who is from Gosanibad under the jurisdiction of Gazole police station, was returning home after closing his shop. The miscreants, who were reportedly on three bikes, followed him.

When Karmakar reached a railway bridge in Gazole, they fired at him. “A bullet grazed his right shoulder but the jeweller, sensing that he was under attack, moved ahead. The miscreants hurled stones at the jeweller and he fell off the bike,” said a police source.

The attackers overpowered Karmakar, who is around 35 years old, and fled with gold and silver which he was carrying. The jeweller said the stolen items were worth around Rs 35 lakh.

“The jeweller raised an alert and local people came to his rescue. The residents also managed to intercept one of the miscreants who was later handed over to police,” said the source.

The police said they were probing the incident.
