The north Calcutta trader who was picked up from the venue of his wedding on Wednesday after a woman claimed to be his wife was indeed married to her, said police on Thursday.
Pooja Kaur, 25, had stormed into Swabhumi, where Rajesh Giri was allegedly getting remarried, claiming to be his wife. She was accompanied by a rights worker who wielded copies of her marriage certificate.
In the ensuing chaos, Pooja was allegedly assaulted.
On Thursday, Rajesh and his father K.B. Giri were arrested on charges of bigamy, snatching Pooja’s chain, outraging her modesty and criminal intimidation.
“We got in touch with the marriage registrar who got Rajesh and Pooja married. He said Pooja’s marriage certificate was genuine,” said the joint commissioner of police (crime), Pallab Kanti Ghosh.
The father-son duo was remanded in police custody till July 4.
Pooja, a resident of Girish Park, alleged she had to run from pillar to post trying to register a police complaint on Tuesday night.
When no police station started a case against Rajesh, Pooja went to Lalbazar on Wednesday and narrated Ghosh her plight.
It was only after Ghosh issued an instruction that the Chitpore police station registered a case against Rajesh and his family, Pooja alleged.
The cops, however, did little else. “We can’t stop a person from getting married without verifying the charge against him. We could do so only on Thursday morning, after the registrar’s office opened,” an officer said.
Rajesh and his father have also been charged with assaulting some reporters. Three persons — Tapan Biswas, Abhishek Saha and Mohammad Imran — were held for the assault.
The woman whom Rajesh was about to marry lodged a complaint of cheating against him and his father late on Thursday.
