PC Chandra Jewellers at Howrah Maidan and Senco Jewellery Palace Abhushan on GT Road near Bataitala Bazar, experienced their first Dhanteras in the town. Like their outlets in Calcutta, the Howrah outlets had started Dhanteras offers in advance, but sales peaked on October 21, the day of Dhanteras. Bengali and non-Bengali customers alike made a beeline for the stores to buy a bit of the yellow metal, hoping to get lucky through the year. Both lightweight and heavy jewellery went off the shelves. One of the prime attractions were the discounts in making charges at the stores. “Heavy jewellery sold less. Customers who are preparing for the wedding season, came for bridal jewellery,” said a spokesperson at PC Chandra Jewellers.

PC Chandra’s Gold Lites collection and Senco Jewellery Palace Abhushan’s Just Lite collection sold the most through the offer days. Apart from jewellery there were takers for gold and silver coins, a popular item for Dhanteras. The gold coins at PC Chandra started from a minimum weight of five grammes while the silver coins started from 10g. “We got a good response at our Howrah branch this year, which was unexpected, considering that we have opened in July,” said Anirban Sen, the managing director of Senco Jewellery Palace Abhushan.
