A fire broke out at the food court on the fifth floor of Acropolis Mall on Friday afternoon. No casualties have been reported. Visitors to the mall are being escorted out of the mall through the blanket of smoke.

This is the second such incident since Tuesday in the city when a fire broke out at a closed restaurant in the Park Centre building on Camac Street.

The fire broke out around 12.40 pm and about 50 minutes later, 15 fire tenders were pressed into service to bring the flames under control.

Firefighters engaged in the operation said the thick cloud of smoke enveloped the building and delayed attempts to reach the source of the fire.

“Visibility inside the building is poor given the thick cover of smoke inside,” said an official.

As the electricity supply to the building was snapped for security purposes, the firemen broke the glass window panes to let out the smoke from inside the building.

"As of now, there is no report of any injury. Firefighting operations are underway. Some firefighters have entered the building wearing oxygen masks," the official told PTI.

Officials in the fire services said they had difficulty accessing the building as the fire exit was blocked with garbage.

“All those things would be looked into later. Our priority is to find the fire source and bring it under control,” said a fire services official.
