Measure life in miles, not in years — this was the theme of Rhapsody, Salt Lake School’s annual fest and students did their best to make memories that they could remember for years to come.
The fest was inaugurated by MLA Sujit Bose and vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University, Suranjan Das and thereafter there was music, dance and lots more.
Ad mad & ramp walk
The ad spoof contest had six teams singing parodies of well-known jingles and poking fun at existing ads. “Kya aapke toothpaste mein biryani hai?” asked a student of Salt Lake (Team A) and also went on to offer replacements for toothbrushes. “Use a shaving brush or broomstick if your toothbrush isn’t good enough,” they almost demonstrated on an unwitting actor. The audience cracked up and they won second place.
St Francis Xavier tried to sell a deodorant saying it could double as pepper spray. But the winner was WWA Cossipore English School, for spoofing the ordeal of life with a smart watch.

“Show time,” the user tells his watch and the watch, personified by a student wearing a necklace of a bitten-into apple, speaks out the timings of film shows near him! The user tries repeatedly to give instructions but the watch misunderstands his accent and provides hilariously wrong information.
The Cossipore school also won the quiz, where guest quizmaster Pranam Roy tossed fun questions: Which train is prominently mentioned in an Agatha Christie novel? (Orient Express, in the book Murder on the Orient Express). Which South American country is named after an imaginary geographical line? (Ecuador). What word describes the ultimate good vs evil battle in the Bible? (Armageddon).
The tribal mask-making competition had students making masks with skulls as well as feathers on them and the folk music contest witnessed songs like Moner manush and Je jon premer bhab jane na. In the band competition Salt Lake School (Team A) performed Linkin Park’s Numb and DPS North Kolkata performed an instrumental cover of Kazi Nazrul Islam’s Shukno patar nupur paye.
The fashion show participants were decked from head to toe. “Our interpretation of the theme was ‘travelling’ and so we presented costumes worn while travelling, such as at airports,” said Siddhant Tandon, of Hariyana Vidya Mandir as they walked the ramp dressed like pilots and stewardesses. Another student, Tanisha Patania, wore a Harley Davidson leather jacket on behalf of bikers.
Stage for world dance
There was debate, drama and poetry slam too. The theme for the dance contest was “glimpses of the world” and National English School performed Paso Doble, a Spanish dance that emulates the bullfight. “Since the colour red is prominent in bullfights I chose to wear a red lacy gown," said Rushali Roy of Class XI.
Salt Lake School performed an international fusion dance to songs like Alan Walker’s Faded and Raabta from the film Agent Vinod. “We have been practising for a whole month,” said Dimple Saha, one of the dancers who also learns Bharatnatyam.
