College Street: Thousands of students who had failed in Calcutta University's BA and BSc Part I exams were declared successful on Thursday following the resurrection of a rule that was scrapped last year.

The revised results have been posted on www.wbresults. nic.in and www.exametc.com. The exams were held in May and June last year and the results were first published on January 25.

"We are expecting that the pass percentage of the revised results, prepared under the 2009 rule, will increase and the success rate will be close to that of the 2016 exams. We will be able to get the exact pass percentage after comparing the two sets of results," vice-chancellor Sonali Chakrabarti Banerjee said.

In the BSc exams, the success rate in the original results had dropped to 71 per cent from 85 in 2016. The pass percentage for BA had dropped to 43 from 65. The publication of the results was greeted with protests by unsuccessful students.

The students had blamed the poor results on the rule that came into effect in 2017. They alleged they had been told during admission that the rule that had been in force since 2009 would apply to them. But the authorities prepared the results following the amended rule.

In BA and BSc, honours students have to study one honours paper and two elective papers in Part-I. Under the 2009 rule, a student was declared successful if he/she cleared only the honours paper. They had the option of clearing the elective papers in supplementary exams

Under the amended rule of 2017, students were required to clear the honours paper and an elective paper. The other elective paper could have been cleared in a supplementary exam.

"We have reverted back to the 20019 rule because the amended rule was cleared by the syndicate in February 2017. The first-year classes had started in the third week of July 2016. A new rule cannot be implemented midway through the session," the VC said.
