Siliguri, June 24: The representatives of the alumni association of Don Bosco School, Siliguri, today said that they will mobilise guardians from around 10 educational institutions in wards 41 and 42 of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation and ask the civic body to remove the dumping yard from the area.
"There are many educational institutions in wards 41 and 42 where over 15,000 students study. The dumping ground is near Don Bosco School and Salesian College at Baikunthapally in ward 42 and the other schools are located near by. Students of these institutions have been bearing the horrible stench from the garbage dump, which can be smelt from a kilometre away," said Manoj Kithania, the president of the Don Bosco Alumni, Siliguri Unit.
"Moreover, the liquid waste coming from the garbage is contaminating the water in the area. All these are posing health hazards for the students of the institutions located in these areas," he said.
Kithania said Father V.T. Jose, the principal of Don Bosco School, had appealed to the authorities concerned, asking them to remove the dumping yard from the area but no steps have been taken so far.
"Our alumni association has approached different state government officials but to no avail. So we have decided to raise a consensus among the guardians of students who are suffering from the garbage disposal and mobilise them to take up the matter with the officials concerned so that the garbage yard is removed immediately," he added.
There are around 20 educational institutions, state aided and private, in the two wards.
Conservancy workers dump around 3.5 tonnes of waste in the area collected from the 47 wards of the civic body everyday.
