Beaten up over Puja donation

A truck driver was injured after a group of youths kicked, punched and hit him with bamboo sticks for refusing to pay Rs 300 as Kali Puja subscription in Madhyamgram on Tuesday evening.

Driver Abdul Hai, a resident of Madhyamgram, is being treated at a nursing home in the area for multiple fractures. His condition was stated to be critical. According to police, the incident happened at Umaipur near Madhyamgram. Some youths stopped the truck and demanded Rs 300 for Kali Puja. The youths dragged Abdul out of the truck and beat him up after he refused to pay, the police said. The youths fled the spot after a few residents came to Abdul's rescue. The residents later blocked the Madhyamgram-Badu Road for over 30 minutes, demanding the arrest of the assailants. No one was arrested till late on Tuesday.

Tram fire

A tram compartment caught fire on Dufferin Road in the Maidan area on Tuesday. Police said the tram on the Kidderpore-Esplanade route was headed towards Esplanade around 9.30am when the rear compartment of the tram caught fire. A tender doused the fire by 9.45am.

Mannan surgery

Congress leader Abdul Mannan on Tuesday underwent surgery to fix fractures in the left knee. The former MLA fractured his knee after tripping and falling on a kerb leading to the airport's terminal on Monday. There were multiple fractures on his patella. Doctors said Mannan would have to stay in hospital for a week.

Chain snatch

Two men on a bike snatched a gold chain from a woman in Sonarpur, South 24-Parganas, on Monday. Ira Mandal, 35, a resident of Garia, was on her way home when the men snatched the chain from her and sped away.
