Extra-C presents CBSE Cryptic Crossword Contest 2014 Calcutta city round, in association with Young Metro, at Lakshmipat Singhania Academy on Friday will see students wracking their brains over the right word.
The competition is being held in 34 cities across the country covering all eight regional zones under CBSE. The winners will then compete in the national round at YMCA, New Delhi, in December.
This year the contest has been thrown open to students of classes IX to XII of CBSE, CISCE and state boards.
Two-member teams will fight it out among themselves by solving cryptic crossword puzzles. “The fastest team to get most answers correct will be declared the winner,” said Vivek Kumar Singh, principal secretary, environment and forest, Bihar, and chief mentor of the event.
“The CBSE Cryptic Crossword Contest was started in 2013 to mark the centenary of crosswords. Solving crosswords improves logical reasoning, enhances vocabulary and sharpens focus and concentration. One needs to persevere and keep practising to master crosswords. This national contest is the only event of its type in the world. We are expecting some 25-odd teams to participate in Calcutta,” said Singh, who has written Understanding Cryptic Crosswords.
Don Bosco School, Park Circus, qualified for the finals last year and finished second.
Registration begins at 10am on Friday. So, hurry!
