Siliguri, June 16: Twenty days have passed since Sonu Patel?s death and police are yet to make any breakthrough.
The Class-X student of Siliguri Hindi High School died in front of his schoolmates following a clash with SFI activists on May 25. His death had created public outcry and furore, forcing ministers and leaders to call press conferences.
The police topbrass, however, refuse to admit that ?nothing has been done?. ?The investigation is on and we have arrested two persons, but we cannot set a time-frame and work around it,? said Rajiv Mishra, the superintendent of police of Darjeeling.
Interestingly, neither of the arrested persons are among the eight named in the FIR lodged by Sonu?s brother. This has triggered allegation that the two have been made scapegoats to protect the real culprits.
Investigating officer Sukumar Ghosh declined disclosing his findings. ?In this case my lips are sealed,? was all he volunteered.
When asked if the persons named in the FIR have been interrogated, no police officials that The Telegraph spoke to gave a specific reply. Those named in the FIR are Dibakar Roy, Surojit Sarkar, Sanjib Sarkar, Upal Sen, Bivash Kundu, Shankar Roy, Sourav and Raja. Three of them are known to be SFI activists.
Police sources said the investigation has been hampered to some extent since Sonu?s school, near which he died, is now closed. ?Once the school reopens, we plan to interrogate the students who were witness to the clash, and maybe, take the case from there on,? a source said. The school will reopen in another week?s time.
But on the basis of preliminary investigation, the police, it appears, are almost certain that Sonu was killed outside the campus. ?However, this does not mean that we are absolving anyone, especially the SFI activists who, by all accounts, were involved in the clash that resulted in the unfortunate death,? said the source.
Given the sensitive nature of the case and huge political stakes involved in it, not many are convinced that justice will ultimately prevail. The police have already been accused of deliberately adopting a go-slow approach to please their political masters.
Sonu?s family is, however, still pinning hopes on the police. ?We request Tripurariji (additional superintendent of police, Siliguri) and the investigating officer to get to the bottom of the case and mete out exemplary punishment to the guilty,? said Binod Singh, Sonu?s maternal uncle, who had brought up Sonu and his two elder brothers.
Emphasising that no amount of monetary compensation will make up for their loss, he, however, said: ?Now that Sonu?s brother Sunil has passed the Madhyamik, a job for him, preferably in the police force, will do us a world of good.?
