40-yr-old killed as witch

Satkodali (Alipurduar) Aug. 11: A 40-year-old woman, Ghuro Oraon, was hacked to death here this evening by her neighbour Matilal Oraon who suspected her of being a witch. Matilal later surrendered to the police.

Matilal had been threatening Ghuro for the past one week. He believed Ghuro was a witch and had targeted his family.

Rita Mandal the gram panchayat member of the Satkodali area said Ghuro had come to her this morning to complain that Matilal in a drunken rage last night had threatened to kill her. Villagers alleged that Matilal had also attempted to kill her once before. After the incident Matilal reportedly shouted that he had killed the witch and that peace would return to his family.


CM bereaved

Calcutta: Leela Bhattacharjee, the mother of Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, died at SSKM Hospital in Calcutta on Thursday. She was 83. Bhattacharjee, who was suffering from geriatric ailments, was admitted to the cardiology department of the hospital over a week ago.


Cops injured

Siliguri: Three policemen, including sub-inspector Vijay Tamang, and three members of the National Voluntary Force, were injured when the mobile patrol van they were travelling in skidded off the road at Chekarmari and turned turtle.


Minor raped

Siliguri: One Ajit Das of Amtala under Bhaktinagar police station was arrested on Thursday afternoon on charges of raping his 11-year-old daughter. The police arrested him following a complaint lodged by his wife Sabita Das. The girl was sent for medical examination at the forensic department of North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.

Siliguri: S.T. Unicom, a wrought-iron furniture manufacturer, launched its Siliguri showroom on Thursday. The company, which has been in the business of designing stylised furniture for the past 14 years, will be offering a wide range of furniture at affordable prices.
