Islampur, Dec. 1: Former Congress MLA from Chopra, Hamidur Rahman, surrendered before the court of the additional district sessions judge here today.
Rahman had been arrested in connection with the murder of a CPM district secretariat member Akbar Ali on April 30, 2003. Fifteen others were also arrested with him. He was remanded in judicial custody. After getting bail, Rehman had not been appearing in court despite notices against him. The court issued an arrest warrant against him. In September, the court ordered police to execute the warrant. The police told the court that Rehman was absconding and appealed to pass a directive to attach his property.
Rahaman’s lawyer appealed to the high court. The high court rejected the petition and ordered him to appear before the Islampur court on the next date for the hearing which was today
Gangtok: Mahendra P. Lama, the founding vice-chancellor of Sikkim University, will address a gathering at the Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technology University, Singapore. He will speak on “benefits of co-operation in the Himalayan river basin countries of Bangladesh, China, India and Nepal”. A media release from the varsity said the two-day workshop beginning on Thursday would be organised jointly by the Strategic Foresight Group and the Rajaratnam School of International Studies.
Jalpaiguri: A branch of the state tribal and folk culture centre was opened here on Wednesday. State backward classes welfare minister Jogesh Burman inaugurated the centre. Musical instruments used by folk artistes of north Bengal will be displayed at the centre. In a separate function here, Burman gave away Sudhi Pradhan awards to a number of artistes.
Islampur: Members of the Chopra block of the Trinamul Congress submitted a memorandum to the BDO of Chopra on Wednesday, demanding compensation for traders whose stalls had been demolished for the widening of NH31.
