A 23-year-old girl in Malda committed suicide on Tuesday, leaving behind a 17-page note on social media where she accused a youth of betrayal after a prolonged love affair, and also his family.

Police arrested the youth on Wednesday from Jharkhand.

Sources said before taking her own life, the girl had posted the note along with some photographs, claiming that she had a relationship with the 24-year-old man.

“However, he started avoiding me recently and even was dilly-dallying when I asked him to marry me. When I asked him, he promised to marry me in November. But later, I came to know that he had already registered his marriage with another woman,” the girl said in her Facebook post before hanging herself.

Her family members claimed that on Monday evening she went to the youth’s place. There, she was physically and mentally abused by him and his family members.

“She could not bear the betrayal and the insults and took such a step. We want all of them to be brought to the book,” said a member of the girl’s family. "Yesterday (Tuesday), they filed a complaint with the police against the youth and his family," the person added.

Based on the complaint, the police initiated a probe.

On Wednesday evening, the youth was nabbed from Jharkhand.

“Our team arrested him from Jharkhand. He has been accused of abetting the suicide and will be produced in court on Thursday,” said a police officer.
