Thinner than a stack of six credit-debit cards. Slimmer than most pencil or pen. Sleeker than a CD box. At 5.8mm thin, Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is the new hero of the smartphone world.

To appreciate how thin the phone is, hold it up next to the phone you currently use. When you take the phone out of the box, don’t be surprised if you are slightly scared to carry a form factor the world has not been used to for quite a few years. Will you break it? Will you bend it? So far, there have been no issues. We are sure Samsung has made the phone go through several bend tests.

At a glance, the phone reminds one of Galaxy S25+, which has the same screen size — 6.7-inch Amoled 2x display. But the slim factor makes all the difference. Yet, it has almost all the features you expect from a flagship phone.

Going around the device, there is the power switch, volume rocker and the USB-C charging point at the bottom.

On the outside, the phone is still made with titanium, which makes it sturdy. There is Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 on the screen, and an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

There are two cameras, unlike the rest of the phones in the Galaxy S25 series — ultra-wide and main; there is no telephoto. The ultra-wide is 12MP and the main camera is 200MP, the same flagship sensor we find on the other Samsung phones.

The phone has enough real estate to feel comfortable in hand while the camera bump is slim. Being only 5.8mm thick (minus camera module) and weighing just 163g, all other phones appear noticeably thicker next to the Edge. The balance of the phone is good, so is the grip, whether you are holding it in horizontal or vertical mode. The phone indeed addresses a gripe that users have had for years — big phones weigh too much.

The camera module had to be newly engineered to fit the frame. The camera actuator is 13 per cent slimmer, and so is the main camera. The ultra-wide snapper is 12 per cent slimmer. The 200MP main camera also acts as a macro camera. The entire circuit board has also been reengineered. No compromises have been made on the heat dissipation structure.

The new phone takes advantage of all the Galaxy AI features and will receive seven years of software updates. There are several handy features, like Screen Sharing (ask directly about anything on your screen and get instant answers) and Video Sharing (show Gemini live video of your room/space and get instant responses).

The 3,900mAh battery on the Edge is the smallest across the S25 range, compared to 4,000mAh in the S25, 4,900mAh in the S25+ and 5,000mAh on the Ultra. Samsung said it’s a full-day phone and can deliver 24 hours of nonstop video playback. How will it hold up after extreme usage involving GPS and video recording? We will find out over the next few days. Charging speed taps out at 25 watts wired and 15 watts wireless.

Samsung’s new phone will definitely encourage other companies to come up with slim phones. At a time when phones have become boring, the Galaxy S25 Edge (upwards of 109,999) comes across as a breath of fresh air.
