Minor fire in Book Fair stall
A minor fire broke out in the Sanskrit Pustak Bhandar stall at Calcutta Book Fair on Tuesday evening, a day after two small fires broke out on the Bypass fair ground. Fire officials said the sparks were spotted on the stall’s ceiling around 8.40pm. Electrical lines were shut down immediately. The fire was extinguished by the stall staff before tenders arrived.
Power supply may be disrupted in some areas of Dum Dum and Sankrail (Howrah) on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday because of CESC maintenance work.he supply will be affected in Clive House Colony, Mall Road, KB Sarani, Raghunathpur, East Mall Road and adjoining areas between 10am and 1pm on Wednesday. In Sankrail, the supply will be disrupted in Sankrail Bharat Housing, Sankrail Station Road and Sankrail Sardarpara between 9am and 4pm on all three days.
A 20-year-old man was found hanging from the ceiling of his bedroom in his Mahestala home on Tuesday morning. Police said Chandan Yadav was a resident of Bihar and had come to the city two months ago. Yadav was suffering from depression, said an officer.
Shibendu Chowdhury, 65, died on Monday night after falling off the balcony of his third-floor flat in Diamond City housing estate in Nagerbazar. Police have ruled out foul play. “Chowdhury was suffering from Parkinson’s disease and might have fallen accidentally,” said an officer.
Ramesh Suraj, in his mid-30s, died on Tuesday after falling off Chitpore bridge. Police said the resident of Ghosh Bagan Lane was walking along the western pavement of the bridge in an inebriated state and possibly fell after losing his balance. He crashed into the roof of a shanty under the bridge. He was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Rabindra Kumar DasGupta, one of the last scholars with equal command of English and Bengali, died in Calcutta on Tuesday. He was 94. A student of Scottish Church College, he was a doctorate in Bengali from Calcutta University and did his D.Phil on Milton in record time from Oxford University under the guidance of Dame Helen Gardner. He taught in Calcutta University and Delhi University (as Tagore Professor) when Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Amartya Sen were his colleagues in the respective institutions. Thereafter, he did a stint in Jadavpur University.e was known for his wide learning and his humility. He was the first Indian executive member of the International Comparative Literature Association. He was director of National Library but resigned later because of differences of opinion with the authorities. He was awarded the Rabindra Puraskar and Deshikottama.
A scuffle broke out between two inmates of Alipore jail on Tuesday. One of the inmates was injured critically. Jail sources said Harun Molla attacked Abbas Molla with a pair of scissors and cut off one of his ears. Police said they were yet to receive a complaint.
