Raiganj: Several children blocked traffic in front of their school here on Wednesday demanding removal of construction material piled up on the road.

The children said they faced problems in getting to their school because of the material dumped at several points on the road, with many slipping and suffering bruises.

The students of Dolna Kindergarten School held hand-written placards in support of their demand. Some teachers and a section of parents also stood with them.

"For past few months, stones, pebbles and sand are being kept piled in the road and even close to our school gate. Many of us have slipped and got injured. Also, it is inconvenient for us to get to the school because of the heaps of construction material. We want all these removed," said Oishi Sarkar, a Class IV student.

There are around 150-odd students in the school, studying from playgroup to class IV.

The teachers echoed the disappointment. "A section of realtors and some local residents are unloading such materials in the road and near our school gate on a regular basis. We have informed the municipality a number of times but nothing has changed," said Sraboni Dey, the principal.

Many residents joined the protest, asking why the local councillor or the civic body had not taken any action

The blockade continued for about an hour. It was withdrawn after Barun Banerjee, the local councillor, promised action.

"We have come to know about the protests. The civic authorities have been asked to clear the road," said Ayesha Rani A, the North Dinajpur district magistrate.

Sandip Biswas, chairman of the Trinamul-run Raiganj municipality, later said: "We will not allow people to dump construction materials on road. A drive will be launched soon (against such dumping)."
