A pregnant woman who had to be urgently taken to Itanagar from Tawang got a lift in the Arunachal Pradesh governor's helicopter.

Governor Brig. B.D. Mishra (Retd) was attending an official event in Tawang on Wednesday when he overheard a local MLA telling chief minister Pema Khandu about the woman who was in a critical condition, Raj Bhawan sources said.

The MLA was saying the woman needed to be transported to Itanagar immediately, but there was no helicopter service between Guwahati and Tawang for the next three days, the sources added.

Mishra offered to take the woman and her husband with him to Itanagar in his helicopter. The two officers, who had travelled with him, had to stay back at Tawang to accommodate the couple.

The helicopter landed at Tezpur in Assam for refuelling, when the pilot noticed a technical snag in the chopper and the flight had to be aborted.

Concerned over the condition of the woman, the governor made a requisition bid to the Air Officer Commanding of the Air Force Station, Tezpur, for another helicopter. The woman and her husband were taken to Itanagar in that chopper, the sources said.

The governor followed them in another helicopter later.

Mishra also arranged for an ambulance with a woman gynaecologist at the Raj Bhawan helipad in Itanagar to take the pregnant woman to Heema Hospital without losing time, the sources said on Thursday.

The woman underwent a successful emergency cesarean delivery.

The distance between Tawang and Itanagar is over 200 km by road and takes around 15 hours. By air, the travel time is around two hours.
