Calcutta: Chris Woakes not just filled in Ben Stokes's shoes at Lord's, but he fared probably even better than his illustrious teammate.
With four wickets in the game, which included the prized scalp of Virat Kohli in the first innings, Woakes churned out a superb century in difficult conditions, apart from stitching a big partnership with Jonny Bairstow that virtually shut the door on India.
For sure, England couldn't have asked for a better substitute for Stokes.
"Obviously, I'm delighted. To win the Test inside four days when we lost a day-and-a-half to rain is special," the all-rounder said at the presentation after England's innings and 159-run victory .
"It's been an amazing game. A complete performance from the team makes it a special victory... We were clinical... We tried to tick it off in fives.
"At one stage, we were in a tricky position even though we were ahead. We just tried to creep that lead up, just tried to get through certain bowling spells. India came at us pretty hard at that time and occasionally, the ball was moving around. But once we got through that stage, we started scoring freely. It became a tad easier then," Woakes added.
Elaborating on his dream performance, Woakes said: "Emotions have run high throughout the game, I suppose. Scoring a hundred and getting on the honours board is something that will stay with me forever, though it has sunk in a little bit more now.
"Wish I had sunk it up more in the middle... It kind of went by in a flash. I was a little bit nervous from 80 onwards, started whooshing outside off stump. Jonny calmed me down a bit, which is funny because usually, I calm him down.
"Nonetheless, it would've been nice to have a bit more red-ball cricket. I went back to Warwickshire and played some white-ball stuff. My wrist was behind the ball, while I also did a bit of work on how I was holding the ball and it's worked."
