Argentina coach resigns

Buenos Aires: Argentina coach Alfio Basile quit on Thursday, the day after his team lost 0-1 to Chile in a 2010 World Cup qualifier, the Argentina Football Association (AFA) said.
“Basile spoke to the president of AFA (Julio Grondona) and quit for personal reasons,” AFA spokesman Ernesto Cherquis said.

 

Chetan wins

New Delhi: India had a mixed day in office with national champion Chetan Anand and Aditi Mutatkar sailing into the semi-finals of the Dutch Open badminton tournament in Amsterdam on Friday. In women’s singles, Aditi defeated Indonesian Rosaria Yusfin Pungkasari 12-21, 21-13, 21-18. Chetan beat Ari Yuli W Hartanto of Indonesia 21-8, 21-16.

 

Jyoti tied 2nd

Villamoura (Portugal): Jyoti Randhawa fired a flawless six-under 66 in the opening round to be tied second in the Portuguese Masters here.

 

Bhullar 11th

Guangzhou: Gaganjeet Bhullar turned in four-under 67 to be the best-placed Indian at tied 11th after the second round of the Midea China Classic golf tournament here Friday. Anirban Lahiri, Rahil Gangjee and Digvijay Singh also made the cut.

 

Atwal tied 15th

Chattanooga (US): Arjun Atwal fired a six-under 66 in the first round to lie tied 15th at Chattanooga Classic golf here.

 

Bopanna out

New Delhi: Rohan Bopanna’s campaign in the ATP Challenger series tournament in Tashkent ended after he and Purav Raja lost 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 to Oliver Marach and Lukasz Kubot.

 

Junior tennis

Calcutta: Amrita Mukherjee of Bengal and Abhishek Alla of Andhra Pradesh walked away with a double crown at the 2nd Asian 14 and under Tennis Tournament. Second seed Abhishek beat Vishal Passi 6-3, 6-2 while Amrita defeated Simran Kaur Sethi 6-0, 6-4.

Ahmedabad: An unbeaten 92 by Ryan Campbell powered Ahmedabad Rockets to a nine-wicket win over Mumbai Champs in the Indian Cricket League here on Friday.

Brief scores: Mumbai Champs 130/6 (Van der Wath 41) lost to Ahmedabad Rockets 131/1 (R. Campbell 92).
