Calcutta: Ruma Sarkar of SAIL Athletic Academy became the best athlete of the 61st state Athletic Championship, which concluded on Saturday.
Ruma set a meet record in the girls under-18 category on Saturday when she ran the 100 meters in record time of 12.1 seconds. She eclipsed Asha Roy’s four-year old record of 12.2 seconds.
The girl from Maldah had also set a new mark on Thursday, when she won the 200 meters.
This was not the first time when Ruma had set two records in a state meet. Last year, she had achieved a similar feat in the U-16 section.
She had also won bronze in the 100m and 200min the National Youth athletics in May.
Her coach, Salil Ganguly, said, “She is talented and extremely hard-working. The best part is she is very consistent in her performance. I’m hopeful that she will go a long way.”
In the girls’ under-14 long jump, Anita Das of Nadia D.S.A set a new record covering a distance of 5.35 meters. Yusuf Khansama of Siliguri MKPS, who had won under-20 long jump on Friday, clinched gold in 100m in 10.9 seconds.
