Calcutta: Raju Mukherjee's sudden resignation as chairman of the state senior selection committee hasn't gone down well with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) brass.
Sourav Ganguly, CAB president, termed it "extremely disappointing", as the selection for Bengal's next Ranji Trophy match against Vidarbha will be done by members of the existing committee on Wednesday.
"I am extremely disappointed with Raju's behaviour. I used to respect him a lot but... This was totally uncalled for," a visibly peeved Sourav said on Tuesday.
The new selection committee will be placed before the next working committee meeting around November 19, once Sourav returns from his commitments with the Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne-promoted Cricket All Stars matches. Sourav, who has been practising at the Jadavpur University Salt Lake Campus ground, will leave for the US on November 9, after the BCCI annual general meeting, and will play in the last two matches.
It is likely that Sambaran Banerjee will be the chairman of the new selection committee. Indu Bhushan Roy and Alok Bhattacharjee's terms have expired, but both will be present during Wednesday's meeting.
Several names have been doing the rounds for the selectors' post with Devang Gandhi and Deep Dasgupta featuring prominently among them. Even Arup Bhattacharjee, who is on the BCCI's junior selection committee, could get a look-in.
It was learnt that the state's selection committee could be formed after the Board's AGM, with Sourav waiting to know whether the national senior and junior selectors get a year's extension. There's also talk that some former players may be included in the National Cricket Academy as part of its restructuring plans.
Sourav also informed that a wicket-keeper's clinic would soon be held as part of the Vision 2020 programme. "We need to find a second man after Wriddhiman Saha."
Sambaran could be asked to be in charge of the wicket-keeper's clinic to unearth talent.
Meanwhile, Pragyan Ojha and Mukesh Kumar underwent MRI on returning to the city on Tuesday. While Ojha suffered a knee injury on the final day of their match against Haryana in Lahli, Mukesh is nursing a groin problem.
