Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham scored a late opportunist double to secure a 3-0 home win for Chelsea over West Ham United in the Premier League on Monday after Brazilian defender Thiago Silva had fired them in front with an early header.

The result lifted Chelsea to fifth on 25 points from 14 games, a point behind fourth-placed Everton, while West Ham stayed 10th on 21 points after failing to rack up a third successive away win.

It was a welcome victory for Chelsea after two successive defeats and Abraham acknowledged there was a rallying cry in the dressing room before the kick off.

“The boys said we needed a performance and that’s what we did today,” the 23-year-old told Sky Sports. “As a striker, scoring goals gives you confidence, my teammates created a lot of chances and we defended well.

“It’s something you do in the park, get in the right areas and be ready when the ball lands. It’s still early doors to be looking at the table, we have to just keep picking up three points.”

Chelsea’s new signing Timo Werner will start firing on all cylinders when he ends his goal drought, manager Frank Lampard said.

Germany forward Werner, who has scored eight goals in 20 games for Chelsea in all competitions since he joined them from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in the close season, has failed to find the back of the net in his last eight starts.

“That’s the period Timo is in, it’s unfortunate but he’s getting in the positions - when one (goal) goes in it will be a run for him,” Lampard told the BBC.

“Tammy and Oli (Giroud) both bring different things, Tammy did his thing today and that’s what we needed.

“West Ham are a good team so I thought today would be a tough match and it proved to be so. Even in the not beautiful moments we defended superbly — Thiago Silva did brilliantly with that.

“We dropped off slightly and it was important tonight we came back. There were loads of things for the team to show their character. We want more.”
