Nehwal enters quarters

Macau: Top seed Saina Nehwal rallied to register a narrow 17-21, 21-18, 21-12 victory over Indonesia’s Dinar Dyah Ayustine to reach the quarter-finals of the Macau Open Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament. However, it was curtains for P. Kashyap and men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy.

AIFF award

Abu Dhabi: The All India Football Federation Thursday won the AFC Developing Member Association of the Year Award at the Asian Football Confederation’s Annual Awards Night here.

Son rises

Madrid: Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane’s son, Enzo, scored on his senior debut as the European champions brushed aside third tier Cultural Leonesa 6-1 to progress into the last 16 of the Copa del Rey 13-2 on aggregate. Barcelona, however, still have work to do to reach the next round after being held 1-1 at Hercules in the first leg of their last 32 tie.

Stormy ‘derby’

Calcutta: Deepak Tangri struck a minute before the end of regulation time to help Mohun Bagan hold East Bengal 1-1 in their under-18 I-League ‘derby’ at the Mohun Bagan club ground on Thursday.

East Bengal had taken the lead in the 22nd minute through Lalcchanhima and claimed a second one, six minutes before half-time. But the referee disallowed Mehtab Singh’s ‘goal’, leading to protests from the red-and-gold players and fans.

The referee stuck to his decision, play resumed, but there was further trouble towards the fag end of the game after Mohun Bagan equalised. The fans of the two teams threw brickbats, forcing mounted police to intervene.

Sahil shines

Margao: Young Sahil Tavora struck twice, including a last-gasp stunner, as FC Goa beat last edition's champions Chennaiyin FC 5-4 in a thriller in the ISL on Thursday. Tavora fired the winner with just a few seconds left in the three-minute injury time.

Harika fifth

Khanty Mansiysk: Grandmaster Harika Dronavalli finished fifth in the Fide Women’s Grand Prix chess tournament after beating Skripchenko Almira of France in the 11th and final round here.

India win

Paris: Playing for 9th-12th standings, India made short work of The Netherlands 3-0 in the opening round robin match of the World women’s team squash championship.

Milos decision

London: Canada’s world No.3 Milos Raonic has parted ways with coach Carlos Moya after the Spaniard guided the big-serving right-hander through his best season on the circuit. “We will no longer be continuing our coaching relationship but remain close friends,” Raonic said.
