New Delhi: Indian Olympic Association (IOA), on Tuesday, made arrangements for Saina Nehwal's father to be accommodated in the Commonwealth Games Village after the ace shuttler threatened to pull out of the meet.
Furious with the decision of the organisers not to allow her father Harvir Singh to enter the Village, Saina wrote to IOA secretary general Rajiv Mehta, saying she would not play unless her father's accreditation was cleared.
"Yes, Saina wrote a letter to us. Since we could understand her problem, we made sure her father got the accreditation," said Mehta, denying it was a kind of arm-twisting tactics on the part of 2010 CWG women's singles champion.
Saina's email to Mehta said: "I messaged you and tried to call you, but you did not pick up the call. But there is so much issue going on with my father... if his accreditation is no(t) cleared as an official I am not going to play matches...."
"This was indeed arm twisting," said a senior IOA official. "It is not for the first time Saina made IOA succumb to her demands. During Rio Olympics, after she lost in the first round, she insisted on returning to India on the same day.
IOA's decision to name Saina's father and PV Sindhu's mother as part of Indian contingent created controversy even before the team left India.
While the badminton squad has Pullela Gopichand as the chief coach and few others as support staff, names of Saina and Sindhu's parents were recommended as officials without assigning any particular role.
