Somdev in title round

Somdev Dev Barman reached the ONGC ITF Futures final in style, shocking Frenchman Jordanne Doble 6-2, 6-3 at Saturday Club on Saturday. The 19-year-old Assamese played near flawless tennis and his winners on both sides of the court found the experienced Doble difficult to deal with. He won in just an hour.

Somdev will meet Yordan Kanev of Bulgaria in the title-clash. Yordan got the better of his Indian challenger Vinod Sridhar 6-4, 6-3 in another semi-final. Meanwhile, top-seeded Mustafa Ghouse and Vishal Uppal made short work of the Bulgarian pair of Yordan Kanev and Todor Enev in the men’s doubles final, beating them 6-3, 6-4 to claim the title.

Results — Doubles final: Mustafa Ghouse-Vishal Uppal bt Todor Enev-Yordan Kanev 6-3, 6-4. Singles semis: Somdev Dev Varman (Ind) bt Jordanne Doble (Fra) 6-2, 6-3; Yordan Kanev (Bul) bt Vinod Sridhar (Ind) 6-4, 6-3.

East Bengal win big

East Bengal opened their A.N. Ghosh cricket meet campaign with a 339-run victory over Mohammedan Sporting on Saturday.

Subhomoy Das hit 113 and Wrichik Majumdar cracked a 27-ball 86 as East Bengal piled up 471 for 7.

In reply, Md. Sporting were bundled out for 132, Wrichik claiming four for 31.

Sub-jr soccer

Halisahar SC beat Arka Sodepur 9-8 in sudden death to emerge champions in the Narayanpur United Club-organised sub-junior football meet on Saturday. The match was tied 2-2 in regulation time.
