East Bengal demand change in Derby date

East Bengal have lodged a protest with the Indian Football Association, demanding a change in the date of their match versus Mohun Bagan. It is scheduled for January 21, but the match versus Mohammedan Sporting is for January 23. East Bengal officials insist that the recovery time for the players will be far too less.

The IFA, meanwhile, has said that it will be tough to provide police posting for the two matches other than these two dates.

East Bengal have even threatened to take the matter up with the AIFF, if the dates are not changed.

Tollygunge down Bagan

Tollygunge Agragami beat Mohun Bagan by five wickets in a two-day CAB league match on Thursday. Set to score 183 for victory, Tollygunge achieved the target in the 78th over. With this win, Tollygunge have 16 points from four matches, while Mohun Bagan have as many points, having played a match more.

Top seed Arijit Goswami edged past Mohammed Imran 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to reach the quarter finals of the boys’ under-14 category in the Calcutta Gymkhana Talent Series tennis meet on Thursday. In the boys’ under-18 category, Farid Alam and Anmol Arora also made it to the last eight stage.

Hooghly win

Biplab Mandi scored the winner as Hooghly beat Murshidabad by a solitary goal in a Group C match of the Konark Sheet state soccer league at the Chandannagar Stadium on Thursday.

School games

The three-day West Bengal State School Games concluded at the Rabindra Sarovar Stadium on Friday with B. R. Ambedkar Sports School winning the team titles in the under-14 boys’ and girls’ sections, respectively.

Nadia claimed the boys’ and girls’ under-17 titles, while Uttar Dinajpur won the under-19 boys’ crown with the under-19 girls’ crown going to Nadia.

State volleyball

The 50th senior state volleyball meet (districts) began at Aurobindo Stadium, Burdwan, on Thursday. In all, 15 districts in the men's section and six in the women’s are taking part. The final will be held on Sunday.
