Calcutta: Trainer Vijay Singh’s youngster Azureus displayed brilliant form to clinch the 1,400m Independence Cup, a sweepstakes which was the main attraction in Saturday’s eight-event race card. In his debut run, the China Visit-Treasure Land colt had thrashed a good field in Western India but subsequently failed during the Bangalore summer season. Suraj Narredu, who partnered the winner, also helped the trainer score a treble. The duo’s other winners were Silver Fox and Flemenco Star who had the measure of the favourite, Imperial Stride, the Swatantrata Cup – also a sweepsatakes. Trainer Daniel David, too, saddled three winners on the day but the third sweepstakes, the Wiseman Cup, was claimed by Vrikodara, a Shafiq Khan-trained horse.RESULTS
