Arsenal players in quarantine bay after the owner of Greek side Olympiacos tested positive for coronavirus

Arsenal placed some of their players under isolation and the Premier League postponed the London club’s match at Manchester City on Wednesday, after the owner of Greek side Olympiacos tested positive for coronavirus.

A number of Arsenal players had met Evangelos Marinakis following their Europa League round of 32 meeting in London on February 27. Marinakis, who also owns English Championship (second tier) side Nottingham Forest, said on Tuesday he had contracted the disease.

The Greek club released a statement on Wednesday saying their players and staff had been tested for the virus and that all tests came back negative.

Arsenal said the risk to their players was “extremely low”. “However, we are strictly following government guidelines which recommend that anyone coming into close contact with someone with the virus should self-isolate at home for 14 days from the last time they had contact.”

Copa del Rey final

Spain’s Copa del Rey final between Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad has been postponed, the national soccer federation RFEF said on Wednesday.

The match was due on April 18 at Seville’s La Cartuja Stadium.

The Uefa postponed two of Thursday’s Europa League ties after one side, Spain’s Getafe, refused to travel to Italy and another, AS Roma, said they had been denied permission to travel to Spain.

Golf meet put off

The Indian Open golf tournament was on Wednesday postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak with organisers promising to reschedule the event at “some point” later this year.

The event was scheduled to take place from March 19-22 at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon.

In Bangalore, the Sports Authority of India has locked down its southern centre as a precaution in the wake of the city recording four coronavirus cases in two days.

The Fed Cup finals that were scheduled to be held in Budapest next month have been postponed, the International Tennis Federation said.

No spectators

The India Open Super 500 tournament will be held without any spectators, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) said on Wednesday.

F1 staff tested

Three Formula One team staff members have been isolated at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, while tests are conducted for coronavirus, officials said on Wednesday. Two of those isolated were from the Haas F1 team and one from McLaren.
