May 18: Statues of eight noted scientists in fibreglass were unveiled today at the Regional Science Centre to create awareness among students about the contributions of scientists to our society.

The statues have been erected at the science park, which has been named The Garden of Fame ? an Enclave of Indian Scientists.

The busts of scientists Homi J. Bhabha, Vikram Sarabhai, Meghnad Saha, S.N. Bose, C.V. Raman, Birbal Sahani, J.C. Bose and S. Ramanujam are placed in the park.

The plaque with each statue contains detailed information, in both English and Assamese, about the scientists ? the dates of birth and death, education, awards they received and their contribution to science.

Constructed with the aim of educating students, the science park was inaugurated by director, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, Gautam Baruah. Anil Kumar Goswami, former principal of Cotton College, was the guest of honour on the occasion.

“These features have been added to the science centre as a part of the International Year of Physics. We hope students will find our endeavour useful,” said an official at the science centre. Apart from the science park, the Regional Science Centre has galleries on earth science, fun science, life science, agriculture, petroleum and forest, and a mock coal mine. It also has a butterfly park, a garden of medicinal plants and a prehistoric life park. In the prehistoric life park, there are 33 models representing various periods of the process of evolution.
