SENTINELS FOOTBALL
Shillong, March 7: Smit SC looked unstoppable as they cruised into the semi-finals of the Sentinels Football Tournament with a 9-0 victory over Nongkseh SC in the last-eight stage here today.
The tournament is organised by Assam Rifles with the support of the Meghalaya Football Association.
Smit will face Madanriting SC in the semi-final.
Madanriting SC edged past a valiant Mawlai SC 1-0 in a morning match at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here.
Smit, who have several Shillong Premier League players for this tournament, appeared to start just the way they left off in their first match, when they put 17 goals past Mawshbuit SC.
They dominated throughout the second quarter-final of the knockout competition.
Five goals came in the first half, with another four after the lemon break. Kyrshan Lynshing scored one goal, Kitbor Kharkongor, R.L. Nongbri and Wanlamsuk Nongkhlaw scored two goals each and Shankupar Kharbyngngar and Rustom Khriam scored a goal each.
Nongkseh's marking was poor and it cost them dearly time and again as the Smit players scored at will.
To their credit, Nongkseh never gave up the fight, but found it hard to get possession of the ball and when they did, their attacks broke down before getting anywhere close to scoring.
Tomorrow, the quarter-final between Lawsohtun SC and Pohkseh SC will be held at 11am and Nongrim Hills SC will meet Eastern Ri-Bhoi FC at 2.30pm.
Yesterday, Nongrim Hills SC beat Jongksha SC 4-0 and Eastern Ri-Bhoi FC defeated Laitlyngkot SC 5-1.
