Guwahati, June 26: A joint team comprising city police officials from the operation unit and CRPF personnel of the 175th battalion arrested a senior member of the Kanglei Yawol Kunna Lup (KYKL) rebel group from Guwahati railway station last evening.

The joint team apprehend Sairem Amudon alias Sundar when he arrived at the station by the Brahmaputra Mail.

Police sources said he was coming from Nepal and boarded the train at New Jalpaiguri station. He was on his way to Dimapur in Nagaland. However, no arms or ammunition was recovered from him.

Amudon had joined the People Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Prepak) — an armed insurgent group of Manipur in 1997. “He was arrested in Manipur in 2007 and after his release from jail he joined KYKL in the same year,” the source said.

According to the source, he had entered the country through West Bengal.

He is wanted by Manipur police in connection with several murder cases, including the massacre of Hindi-speaking people in the state in 2008.

A case has been registered against him in Panbazar police station and he is likely to be produced in court tomorrow.

“We have contacted our Manipur counterparts seeking more details about him. A Manipur police team is likely to arrive in the city to interrogate him,” the source said.

The source said the KYKL had set up bases in Nepal and many of their leaders were suspected to be hiding in that country. “Apart from Nepal, the banned outfit also has hideouts in Darjeeling and Sikkim,” he said.

Some top KYKL activists, including Ningthoujam Tomba, the self styled commander-in-chief of the outfit, were arrested from Darjeeling’s Matigara police station area in March 2010.

Last month, three suspected women cadres of Manipur-based militant outfits were apprehended by the BSF while they were entering Meghalaya from Bangladesh.

Two of the cadres belong to the Revolutionary People's Front of the People's Liberation Army, while the third belongs to Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL).

Several KYKL leaders are suspected to own properties in various parts of Guwahati. In fact, last year, the National Investigation Agency even attached some of the properties of top KYKL leaders.
