Guwahati, Nov. 20: Dispur has named director-general of civil defence and commandant-general of homeguards Mukesh Sahay as the next director-general of Assam police.
An order issued by the state home department last evening said Sahay, a 1984-batch IPS officer, holding charge of additional director-general of CID, has been posted as Assam police DGP after incumbent Khagen Sarma attains his superannuation on November 30.
Sahay told The Telegraph that he would spare no effort to prove himself worthy of the trust bestowed on him by chief minister Tarun Gogoi and the state government. "Policing is always a challenging task. Crime control, combating new types of crimes and capacity-building of police personnel, among others, will be some of the challenges which have to be addressed."
"Militancy also remains an area of concern. Though militancy in the state has considerably declined, it is yet to disappear," he said. "My endeavour will be to carry on the good work initiated by my predecessors. After I take charge, I will sit with my officers and prepare a list of priorities."
Additional director-general (administration) Umesh Kumar has been promoted to the rank of DGP and he will replace Sahay as director-general of civil defence and commandant-general of homeguards. ADGP (vigilance and anti-corruption) R. Chandranathan has been given the additional charge of ADGP (CID). IGP (homeguards and civil defence) Binoy Kumar Mishra has been promoted and posted as ADGP (homeguards and civil defence).
Similarly, IGP (CID) Y.K. Gautam has been promoted and posted as ADGP (modernisation and logistics).
On his repatriation from central deputation, K.V. Singh Deo has been posted as ADGP (administration).
