Guwahati, July 8: A group of alumni and students of various city colleges have joined hands to "voice the concern of youths".
The students have formed an association, the College Students Welfare Committee, so they can work in an organised way.
An alumnus of Cotton College and president of the working committee of the association, Abhinav Borbora, today said they have identified two agendas for the next three months.
"During the next three months, we will attempt to shape a comprehensive anti-ragging package. We will create awareness on ragging, assist students with legal support and open a toll-free number to help them. We will also urge the government to enact an appropriate library legislation, which is the need of the hour," he said.
Besides Borbora, the working committee comprises Elsayed Mustafa Hussain and Swagata Mahanta, also from Cotton College, as general secretaries and Pranab Jyoti Das from Royal Group of Institutions and Jenisha Kalita from Handique Girls College as secretaries.
"The idea of the association was mooted a year back. Thereafter, we took up some activities like submitting a memorandum to the government for a library act, organised a conference against patriarchy and panel discussion to manage tension, stress and careers. We decided to form the group to work in an organised way," Borbora said.
He said some issues that concern them are the increasing commercialisation of various arenas traditionally associated with youths and growing class polarisation among the student community.
