Mizoram sets HSSLC record

Mizoram set a new record on Thursday in the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examination by registering 80.49 pass percentage in all the streams, which is the highest ever since the first HSSLC examination conducted by the Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) in 1997.

Aizawl: Mizoram set a new record on Thursday in the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examination by registering 80.49 pass percentage in all the streams, which is the highest ever since the first HSSLC examination conducted by the Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) in 1997.

Earlier this month, the state set a record by registering the highest ever pass percentage in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination since 1978.

According to the plus two results declared in the arts, science, commerce and vocational streams, girl students topped the examination by securing a record 81.12 per cent, while boys lagged behind by 1.29 per cent at 79.83 per cent.

This time, the pass percentage registered an increase of five per cent over last year.

The exams were conducted in February and March. Of the 12,109 candidates on roll, 11,802 appeared and 9,500 students have successfully cleared the examination. About 2,096 students failed and 206 got compartmental chance, while 307 candidates were absent. Of the 528 candidates on roll for the old course, 175 successfully cleared the examination, while 297 failed, registering 37.08 per cent.

Girls outnumbered boys as there were 4,912 girls against 4,588 boys.

Overall, 445 candidates passed with distinction, 3,220 in the first division, 3,988 in the second division and 1,874 in the third division.

Of the total 9,252 candidates enrolled in the arts stream, 8,977 appeared and 7,111 cleared the examination registering a pass percentage of 79.21,which is six per cent more than last year. A total of 1,732 candidates failed in the arts stream.

As for the science stream, the total students on roll was 2,034 and 2,013 appeared in the examination. While 1,751 students emerged successful, 213 failed. The total pass percentage in the science stream was 86.98, which is five per cent more than last year.

In the commerce stream, out of the 437 students enrolled, 731 appeared and 396 successfully cleared the examination registering 91.88 pass percentage against last year's percentage of 85.12.

The vocational stream has the lowest record of average pass percentage at 63.52. Altogether 386 students faced the examination out of which 242 passed. Altogether 381 candidates were enrolled in the vocational stream and 121 students failed.

C. Vanlalremruati of Home Mission School here topped in the arts stream by securing 462 out of 500 marks, while Angela Vanlalhmangaihi of St Paul's Higher Secondary School here was a topper in the science stream. She scored 464 out of 500.

In the commerce stream, K. Lalthansanga of St. Joseph Higher Secondary School here topped the merit list by securing 451 out of 500 marks, while in the vocational stream, Lalhriatkimi of Government Mamawii Higher Secondary School here topped the merit list by securing 529 out of 650 marks.

MBSE chairman F. Lianhmingthanga congratulated all the successful students and attributed the outstanding achievement to hard work and dedication of both teachers and students.

The compartmental examination for all subjects will be held on June 21 in eight centres across the state.
