Aizawl, Jan. 13: Mizoram police officer and wrestler Saidingliana Sailo has been sucked into an illicit liquor controversy, a charge he has denied, claiming he has been framed.
?I never sold liquor. This is impossible as I cannot find even a few glasses for myself,? he was quoted as saying.
The DSP (CID crime) reportedly traced the ?baseless allegations? to a row he had with a man, now an active member of the Central YMA?s supply reduction service. This man, Sailo said, was present when the Indian-made Forei-gn Liquor (IMFL) was seized.
On January 9, volunteers of the supply reduction service seized three bottles of IMFL from Vanlalchhunga, a resident of Chaltlang Lily Veng. He allegedly claimed to have bought the liquor from the police officer.
The YMA said the man had confessed to having bought eight crates of IMFL from Sailo at Rs 250 a bottle. He had then retailed them at Rs 600 to Rs 700 a bottle, he said.
?The volunteers threatened Vanlalchhunga and asked him if he bought the liquor from Saidingliana Sailo. Out of fear, having in mind the Mission Vengthlang incident, he just said yes,? Sailo was quoted as saying.
Sailo said he had received threatening phone calls before the Mizoram wrestling championship last year.
?Anyone can stuff bottles of liquor inside or on the premises of my house without my knowledge and claim he seized liquor from my possession,? Sailo said.
?We have not harassed anyone, neither Vanlalchhunga nor anybody. Neither did we publicise that the liquor came from Saidingliana Sailo. It just leaked out,? Lalngheta, SRS member and CYMA central executive committee member was quoted as saying. SRS leaders also met Aizawl superintendent of police L.T. Hrangchal.
