Kristi, Udit bite dust in last four

Guwahati, July 20: Assam giantkillers Kristi Boro and Udit Gogoi today bit the dust in the quarter-final of the OIL-AITA Super Series Tennis Tournament at the All-Assam Tennis Association Complex here.

While Kristi, who toppled Bhakti Parwani of Gujarat in the pre-quarters yesterday, crashed out in the under-14 girls' singles event, Udit bade adieu to the under-14 boys' singles court.

Fifth seed Bhakti Shah of Telangana defeated Kristi 6-1, 6-0 in the round of eight today, while second seed Sandeep VM of Tamil Nadu put an end to Udit's roller-coaster ride, beating him 6-1, 6-1.

Barring Parwani, the remaining three among the top four seeds made it to the girls' under-14 singles semi-finals.

Second seed Sarannya Gaware of Maharashtra got the better of seventh seed state mate Bala S. Tamhankar 6-3, 6-1, while third seeded Maharashtra girl Gargi Pawar defeated eighth seed Mushrath Anjum Sheikh of Andhra Pradesh 6-2, 6-1. Fourth seed Sudipta Senthil Kumar of Maharashtra prevailed over sixth seed Riya Uboveja of Delhi 7-5, 6-4 in the quarters today.

The under-14 boys' event witnessed an upset in the form of unseeded Naresh Badgujar of Haryana handing a 6-3, 6-3 defeat to third seed statemate Divesh Gahlot.

In the other quarter-final matches, top seed Aaryan Zaveri of Gujarat made short work of Nikhil Niranjan of Karnataka 6-1, 6-0, while Subham Saini of Haryana beat Amrutjay Mohanty of Odisha 6-3, 6-4 in a clash of unseeded players.

The under-16 boys' singles also had an upset in the quarter-finals today.

Fifth seed Jagtar Arora of Haryana overcame fourth seed Vipul Mehta of Delhi 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in a gruelling match.

Second seed Natholin Golmei of Chandigarh joined him, beating Aman K. Patel of Gujarat 6-0, 7-6 (6). Aaryan prevailed over Naresh Badgujar of Haryana 6-3, 6-1. Sandeep VM also faced a tough challenge from Krishnan Hooda of Haryana before winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 for a semi-final berth.

It was a smooth flow for the seeds in girls' under-16 quarter-finals. Top seed Bhakti Parwani overcame eighth seed Ananya Kothakota of Andhra Pradesh 7-5, 6-3, while second seed Rituparna Choudhury (Odisha) beat fifth seed Bhakti Shah (Telangana) 6-1, 6-4 and third seed Saranya Gaware (Maharashtra) defeated Sandeepti S. Rao (Haryana) 6-2, 6-0. Gargi Pawar also made it to the semi-finals after she made short work of Bala S. Tamnkankar (Maharashtra) 6-1, 6-0.

Soccer: Dibrugarh Railway Divisional Sports Club edged past Dibrugarh Football Coaching Centre 3-2 in a league match of the ongoing first Monuj Patra and Boga Das Senior Division Football tournament of Dibrugarh District Sports Association at the DDSA Stadium today.
