Guwahati, July 21: Assam cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said his email account was hacked and mails were sent from his account to people asking for money to be sent to various bank accounts.

He informed about the incident through his Twitter handle along with two snapshots of a mail demanding money.

"My email id has been hacked by some unscrupulous elements and mails were sent seeking financial help. Avoid any such mail. Case being registered," Sarma tweeted at 10.22am.

The snapshot of the email revealed that a mail was sent to one Ashok Bajaj, asking him to transfer Rs 2 lakh to a Pune-based State Bank of India account belonging to someone named Zeeta Ralte.

Later in the afternoon, on the sidelines of a programme here, Sarma told reporters, "The hacking seems to be the work of someone who has networks throughout the nation. The account holder seems to be someone from Mizoram but the account is in Pune, Maharashtra."

However, no case has been registered so far. Whenever a case is registered in any police station in Assam, it then gets forwarded to the cyber cell of the criminal investigation department (CID) of Assam.

"We haven't got any complaint or case relating to the matter so far. We are aware of it but since the minister said he will register a case, we are waiting for it," A.K. Jha, additional director-general of police of the CID told The Telegraph.

Guwahati police commissioner Hiren Nath said no case had been registered in any police station yet.
