Imphal: Manipur police have provided two personal security guards to head constable Thounaojam Herojit after he confessed to have "witnessed fake encounter killings" by the state police.
Official sources said director-general of police L.M. Khaute on Thursday issued an order detailing one head constable and one constable as personal security guards for Herojit.
The police chief's move comes after a directive by the Asian Human Rights Commission to Khaute to protect Herojit and his family.
The directive by the panel came after Herojit, in an affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court earlier this month, claimed that he was witness to various fake encounter killings by the state police between 2003 and 2009. He claimed that the "killings" were carried out following the orders from superior officials.
The affidavit was submitted during a hearing of the Supreme Court on a petition filed by the Extra Judicial Execution Victim Families Association, Manipur, on fake encounter killings in the state.
Herojit said he noted the killings with dates, places and names of the victims in his diaries, which he said were seized by the CBI.
He also stated that an attempt was made on his life in 2016.
Sources said the two security guards are detailed at Herojit and his family's quarters at the Commando Complex in Imphal.
Herojit is the main accused in the killing of former militant Ch Sanjit in 2009 here by the police in broad daylight.
At that time the police had claimed that Sanjit was killed in an encounter.
However, Herojit "confessed" at a news conference in January 2016 that he shot Sanjit inside a medicine store following the orders from his superior officer.
Trial of the case is under way in an Imphal court after the CBI submitted the chargesheet.
